State Disability Insurance (SDI) is a program administered by the Employment Development Department (EDD) and financed by employee/worker contributions. A person who is unable to perform his usual and customary work and had paid into the SDI system can apply for SDI. Claims should be filed within 49 days of the date of disability. Benefits are payable for up to 12 months.

UIB is a program administered by the Employment Development Department (EDD) and financed by employee/worker contributions. A person who is unemployed through no fault of his own may qualify. A person must be willing and able to work, and is actively looking for work. Benefits are payable for up to six months, or in cases of severe economic times, 12 months.
