Become involved and make a difference!
We have
Unique Volunteer Opportunities
with School Outreach
We invite you to join our effort!
Volunteers make a difference by educating students in our school classrooms. We bring factual information to students about serious mental illness in an effort to eliminate stigma, to help students recognize symptoms and seek treatment when appropriate, and to be future citizens who will make decisions for the benefit if people with mental illness.
To prepare to be a volunteer for our School Outreach program we ask folks to participate in an orientation session for an hour or so to become acquainted with our materials and then to observe a presentation in an actual classroom. he first time one presents we offer a mentor to accompany him/her. Our volunteers usually are asked to present three or four times a school year. We are hoping for more requests in the 2008-2009 school year.
To prepare for the 2008-2009 year,
we need to replenish our volunteer bank.
The first Orientation will be:
August 21, at 1:00 pm
at the NAMI office.
This is a very rewarding activity. Please come to join us!
PARENTS AND TEACHERS AS ALLIES
Another volunteer opportunity is to present to educators and/or parents using the monograph written by Joyce Burland, Ph.D., Parents and Teacher as Allies.
We have been doing this presentation for the past two years and have had great success. We want to be ready to offer our services to the Prevention and Early Intervention plans should it be indicated. In any event we know the value of bringing information to teachers and we need to have a supply of volunteers so we are available when needed.
This program requires a day of training. The presentation itself takes two hours. We need family members who have experience having a loved one who was or is ill as a child and also individuals who have themselves experienced illness as a child or adolescent. You can make a huge difference!
The training for Parents and Teachers as Allies will be held:
Saturday, September 6th
8:00 am to 5:00 pm
at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
The church is located on the corner of
Prospect and 17th Street in Santa Ana.
In order that we have materials prepared for you,
please call to register for either of these trainings.
